How Long Does It Take to Become an Esthetician in Ontario?

The Short Answer

Becoming an esthetician in Ontario takes between 6 months and 2 years, depending on the type of program you choose and the level of credential you're aiming for. Certificate programs are shorter. Diploma programs take longer but open more doors — especially when the diploma includes CIDESCO international accreditation.

Certificate vs. Diploma: What's the Difference?

Ontario's aesthetics training market offers two main tiers:

Certificate programs typically run 4–8 months and focus on a specific set of skills — basic facials, waxing, lash and brow, or skin care specialist training. They're faster, but the scope is narrower. Employers see certificates as entry-level.

Diploma programs run 10 months to 2 years and cover the full scope of aesthetics practice, including advanced skin care, body treatments, spa services, and in many cases medical-grade techniques. Diplomas qualify you for a much wider range of job roles and higher starting salaries.

Program Lengths at Gina's College

Here's what the timeline looks like at Gina's College of Advanced Aesthetics in Ontario:

  • Advanced Aesthetics Diploma — Full CIDESCO-accredited program. Includes the CIDESCO International Diploma exam pathway for graduates who choose to pursue it.
  • Medical Aesthetics Diploma — Advanced training in laser therapy, chemical peels, microneedling, and clinical skin treatments.
  • Certificate Programs — Shorter programs in microneedling, skin care specialist, permanent makeup, lash and brow, dermaplaning, and more.

Contact admissions for specific program durations, as they can vary by intake and campus.

Does Program Length Affect Career Outcomes?

Yes — significantly. Estheticians with diploma-level training and hands-on clinic hours typically earn more and move into senior roles faster. The national average wage for estheticians in Canada is around $19–$24/hr, but graduates from accredited programs with medical-grade training can earn considerably more, especially in medical spas and clinical settings.

Why Accreditation Matters More Than Speed

A shorter program might seem appealing, but credentials are what employers look at. Gina's College is Ontario's only CIDESCO-accredited career college. CIDESCO (Comité International d'Esthétique et de Cosmétologie) is the world standard in aesthetics education — recognized in 40+ countries.

If your goal is a serious career in aesthetics, the diploma takes longer, but it pays off in the career you build afterward.
